Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) confirmed that it will keep using the six categories for selecting people in Express Entry draws in 2024.

They will choose individuals based on specific qualifications like education, work experience, or language skills to support Canada’s economic needs.

The six categories target people with:

1. Good French language skills

2. Work experience in healthcare

3. Work experience in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) jobs

4. Work experience in trade occupations

5. Work experience in transport jobs

6. Work experience in agriculture and agri-food jobs

Express Entry category-based selection started in May 2023 to help Canada meet its economic goals. These categories were decided after talking to provinces, territories, and other groups like unions, employers, and immigration researchers about what would be of most benefit to them.

IRCC wants to invite newcomers who can fill important gaps in Canada’s workforce and help the economy. The categories also support promoting the French language outside of Quebec.

IRCC introduced the categories in 2023 and mentioned they would review and update them each year. In 2023, the first draw invited 1,500 candidates with healthcare experience. Throughout the year, over 16,000 candidates were invited in 17 separate draws. In 2024, one draw invited 7,000 candidates with French language proficiency.

Who is eligible for category-based selection?

1. To be eligible, candidates must already have Express Entry profiles. Economic immigrants without an Express Entry application are not eligible.

2. Candidates must have at least six months of full-time work experience in a single occupation in the past three years to be considered for a work-experience-based category.

3. Candidates invited for French language proficiency must score a 7 in all language categories (reading, writing, listening, and speaking).
