In response to the unprecedented wildfire season of 2023, which devastated communities and strained resources across Canada, the Government of Canada is stepping up to assist those impacted. The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, has announced a range of special measures designed to support Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and temporary residents affected by the wildfires.

In light of the severe impact of these wildfires, which were exacerbated by rapidly warming climate conditions, the government is offering free replacement of crucial documents for those who have lost, damaged, or had their documents destroyed due to the fires. This includes permanent resident cards, Canadian citizenship certificates, Canadian passports, and other travel documents. These measures are intended to alleviate the burden on those who are focusing on recovering and rebuilding their lives.

Additionally, individuals with employer-specific work permits who have been affected by the wildfires will have the opportunity to transition to an open work permit, allowing them greater flexibility during this challenging time.

These provisions will be available until November 30, 2024, providing ample time for affected individuals to address their document needs while managing the pressing demands of their personal and community recovery.

For international students, temporary foreign workers, and other visitors whose status expires by November 30, 2024, there will be options to restore or extend their status at no cost. This includes the ability for temporary workers to extend their work permits if their employment has been disrupted by the wildfires, and for international students to extend their study permits if their academic schedules have been impacted.

In addition, foreign emergency services personnel entering Canada to assist in wildfire response efforts will be exempt from application and biometrics fees. This exemption is both a gesture of gratitude for their crucial contributions and a means to streamline their entry into Canada.

Detailed information on eligibility, application procedures, and covered documents is available on the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website.
